First came the city centre’s new Premier Inn, who, not long after opening announced plans to expand in order to cope with the demand. Then came the major announcement of a new 140-room Hilton Garden Inn, set to be built soon on the Smithfield site.Whilst development company Realis have also announced plans for a hotel as part of their Unity Walk retail and leisure development, on the old bus station site.

Now Visk Ventures, have submitted their plans for a proposed brand new six storey, 104-room hotel with bar, restaurant and gym, to be built on the Clementsons Mill car park, off Clough Street in the city centre.Planning documents also indicate that the top floor of the building would be used for either business space or a penthouse ‘apart-hotel’.

Jonathan Bellamy, Chair of the Stoke-on-Trent City Centre Partnership, has welcomed the plans, saying: “several years ago, one of the main cries of need from the city centre was for more hotel offering, then suddenly along comes, potentially, four new ones! And with the success of the expanding Premier Inn that need has been borne out. Despite our failure to win the City of Culture status and all the growth and increase of visitors that would have brought, we continue to aspire to see increased numbers of people wanting to stay in our city: to stay over on business, to experience all the attractions we have to offer, or locate here as an ideal base for the wider region. The question though is whether the growth in hotel building will match the growth in tourism and business visitors to our city. Time will tell."

However the potential hotel could cause one challenge as it is planned to be built on an existing car park with 167 spaces. If plans are agreed then about 100 of those spaces would be lost.

In their application Visk Ventures says the hotel will create 20 full-time and 10 part-time jobs, and “provide for significant investment into the city centre both during the construction phase, and also during the operation of the facility.”
